Xiaomi has released the update of week number 367 for its custom ROM (MIUI) and, among other things, the update adds the option of facial unlocking to two smartphones of the company. According to the information from the Chinese page Ithome, it is confirmed with certainty that the Xiaomi Mi 6 and Mi MIX 2 now have the facial unlocking feature as a result of the update. This news has also been published in the official forum of MIUI in Chinese, where it has been detailed a little more about it.
How will facial unlocking work on these Xiaomi devices?
This comes hand in hand with the update that the Redmi Note 5 Pro has received, which marks the beginning of facial unlocking in Xiaomi terminals. As in the Redmi Note 5 Pro, the new “face unlock” function for the Mi 6 and the Mi MIX 2 uses the front camera to identify the build; although it is less secure compared to iris recognition and 3D depth of field recognition. What do we mean by this last? Unfortunately, it is possible that people with similar appearances can also unlock their device through facial recognition.
To add this feature, users will need to update to the latest version. This should usually be done through OTA. Once the above is done, the function can be found in “Settings” – “Lock screen, password and fingerprint” and then “Add face data”. You should make sure that you have enough light when recording the face for unlocking, as this will make the registration more accurate. In the same way, when unlocking the device, good lighting is recommended for a higher unlocking success rate. With this additional biometric recognition method, users of the Xiaomi Mi 6 and the Mi MIX 2 will now have the complete package of unlock options: by finger, pattern, password, pin and face recognition; each with configuration possibilities to block access to your phone or private information inside it.
