Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S VS Meizu 16 Battery Comparison – Do We Really Need Performance On Small Battery Smartphone?
The display of the smartphones are getting better and better, and the viewing experience has taken a huge leap since the 18:9 full-screen smartphones arrived. However, in these glorious full-screen 6-inch + flagships, battery life has become their worst nightmare. Phones with great battery life tend to sell more. Obviously, manufacturers also know this, so every time at the press conference, they start the highlight reel of how powerful is that flagship, how much is the battery life, and most importantly how they manage to put an XXXX battery under the chassis which is XXmm. Despite that, they claim to offer high performance on small battery smartphones, which isn’t practically possible. Whereas, they hardly give the same level of performance on a large battery smartphone.
This is what actually happens when we do a Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S VS Meizu 16 battery comparison.
Starting with the similarities, both smartphones have a generous 6-inch Full-HD+ display. Both flagships run on Snapdragon 845. Both have highly optimized UI. However, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S has a battery capacity of 3400mAh. Meanwhile, Meizu 16’s battery is 3010mAh. The gap between both phones battery capacity is not that much. Let’s see if Meizu 16 can cover the 390mAh gap.
Theoretically, Meizu’s Super AMOLED display is more power-efficient than Xiaomi’s IPS LCD display. This is the only difference.
Before starting the tests, let us clear two points. First, 3400mAh battery is the standard capacity on a 6-inch screen smartphone, so this is not a deliberate choice of extreme conditions. The second point is that the long-term performance trick doesn’t work that much on the small battery. So this can not be regarded as a competition between the long-term high performance and the big battery. Several manufacturers don’t provide the same high-level performance with big battery smartphones. However, when choosing a small battery, most of them are quite confident about the performance strategy. Why is that so?
So we have conducted the battery test on the most power and graphics consuming game on Android which is PUBG Mobile. As you can see in the image, we have set the settings (HDR + extreme frame rates + anti-aliasing off + shadow on + smooth adaptive off) of the game both smartphones. Just remember that these settings have been taken to make the load as consistent as possible. Afterall, we have the same picture quality since the GPU is the same.
Test no.1: Gameplay test
Starting with the first test, which is the battery endurance test. Here we will record the power consumption of both contenders for a certain period of time, on the game known as PUBG Mobile. The software used is the famous GameBench.
First of all, let’s look at the performance of Meizu 16. You can see that the average frame rate of the game is 40 fps when the game ran for 29 minutes and 55 seconds. It’s a normal gameplay on the latest Snapdragon 845. The battery level dropped from 46% to 30% with a total battery reduction of 15%. Furthermore, the hourly battery drain is 32% (lower the battery), regardless of the low power saving mode, full power can support continuous gaming for about 3.1 hours (100% charged) on a 3010mAh battery capacity. The score is pretty good if you consider the battery capacity.
Meanwhile, for Xiaomi MIX 2S, you can see that although the game is also stable at around 40fps, the fluctuation is slightly larger than that of Meizu 16, but it also guarantees a smooth game experience. In terms of power consumption, the whole 20-minute game consumes 8% battery, dropping from 95% to 87%. The hourly battery drain is 24%. Compared with Meizu 16, Xiaomisignificantlyificant better battery drain. Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S can support continuous gaming for about 4.2 hours (100% charged) on a 3400mAh battery capacity.
Note: Though both smartphones had different time lengths, MIX 2S (20 minutes) and Meizu 16 (almost 30 minutes), still the expected hourly draining on the same settings revealed the whole scenario which is not dependent on the time length.
Even with that extra 400mAh which aren’t that much on the high-end performance, Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S has a way battery life which is 1.1 hours more gameplay than Meizu 16. Of course, because of the intensity of the game and the control are not exactly the same, there must be some inconsistencies. That is why we will conduct another test.
Test no.2: PUBG Watch Mode
Similar to the first test, the two phones will be charged to 100% full power at the same time. Xiaomi MIX 2S and Meizu 16 will be using the watch mode this and the spectating time length will be 1 hour. After that, all processes in the background are cleared, and the screen is in a standby state for 1 hour
It can be seen that as the game progresses, the remaining power of the Xiaomi MIX 2S and Meizu 16 is gradually widening. The remaining power difference has increased from 1% to 4%. In this case of light load, the difference is not large, it is a completely acceptable range, but the result of standby for 1 hour is somewhat unexpected.
Test no.3: Standby After Clearing Background Process
In the case of the 1-hour standby after clearing background process, Xiaomi MIX 2S battery level decreased only 1%, which is relatively a normal situation. Meizu 16’s battery level decreased by 3%. This also indicates that the operation of emptying the background does not completely end all processes in Flyme, the background program is still using power.
The difference in battery temperature is basically the same as our measured results. No matter the front or the back, the highest temperature of Meizu 16 will be slightly higher than that of Xiaomi MIX 2S. Of course, the difference is not big. In the case of having the Snapdragon 845 this year, the heat dissipation of the two high-performance flagships is actually good. But the Meizu 16 with the heat pipe cooling is at a disadvantage, which means that the heat pipe does not necessarily represent the absolute difference in heat dissipation.
Looking at the tests conducted above, the winner is:
Winner: Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S
So why did Meizu 16 lost?
- Lesser battery capacity then Mi MIX 2S (50%)
- More power dissipation (20%)
- More heat dissipation (5%)
- Background processes never completely clear despite clearing them in Meizu’s UI (25%)
Like said before, while selecting a small battery smartphone, one has to manage intelligently with the battery consumption. When running a high-performance test, it is basically impossible to make up the difference in battery capacity with this trick. Interesting, the performance benchmark test is lighter than practically playing a high-end game like PUBG Mobile. So if you want to play PUBG Moblie on a high-performance yet the small battery device, you might expect a faster battery drain in comparison to the battery benchmark test.
